Apprentice at Ahus

Ahus is approved as a training company and offers apprenticeships in several fields. You can apply for an apprenticeship as a healthcare worker, porter, or nutrition chef.

Ahus is a large workplace with over 12,000 employees across many different fields. Our goal is to be a safe workplace that facilitates learning and skill development.

Each year, we welcome a number of apprentices in the fields of healthcare work, portering, and nutritional cooking. As an apprentice with us, you will have the opportunity to develop and acquire knowledge in unique and safe environments. We will do our utmost to ensure that you have an educational and enriching experience with us.

The Apprenticeship Programmes

The education is based on Vg2 health worker subjects. During the apprenticeship, the Vg3 curriculum in health worker subjects is followed.

Job Responsibilities

The health care worker attends to the patient's need for holistic care and provides basic nursing. As an apprentice in the health worker field, you will learn to provide professional health assistance, perform basic first aid, and ensure patient safety.

About the Apprenticeship at Ahus

  • At Ahus, we offer apprenticeship placements in medical and surgical wards, as well as some positions in acute psychiatry.
  • During the apprenticeship, you will participate in joint subject days with teaching, experience sharing, and collaborative tasks. There is also the opportunity for study days and placements in other units during the apprenticeship period.
  • The apprenticeship lasts for two years; in the first year, you will work alongside a mentor, and in the second year, you will have your own rota.
  • The apprenticeship is paid, and during the two years, you will receive a salary equivalent to that of a newly qualified health care worker.
  • After two years of apprenticeship, you will receive a vocational certificate as a health care worker, following a successful trade examination, and authorisation as a health care worker.

Job Responsibilities

Porters transport patients, medications, and equipment in hospitals, care homes, or other institutions.

About the Apprenticeship at Ahus

  • You will have a dedicated mentor.
  • You will have a fixed rota with day, evening, night, and weekend shifts. One fixed day each week is reserved for teaching, theory, training, assignments, and more.
  • You will receive a salary during the apprenticeship. The salary is based on the wage for skilled workers with 0 years of experience; in the first half-year, you will receive 30% of the base salary, then 40% in the second half-year, 50% in the third half-year, and 80% in the fourth half-year.
  • Additionally, you will receive fixed supplements for evening/night and weekend shifts at the same rates as regular employees.
  • At the beginning of the apprenticeship, you will receive thorough foundational training as a porter in patient transport, infection control, first aid, CPR, and patient handling. Furthermore, you will attend courses in clinical communication, CPR with case training, theoretical training from the three textbooks in the subject, assignments, and more.
  • Towards the end of the apprenticeship, you will receive training as a porter coordinator and will have the opportunity to take on shift responsibility and coordinate operations.

Practical Periods During the Apprenticeship

To meet the objectives of the curriculum, you will have two practical periods:

  • Section supply and section transport and environment: to cover curriculum objectives related to goods, logistics, and waste management (approximately one and a half to two months).
  • An 8-week practical period in a clinic to cover health-related curriculum objectives.

The education is based on VG2 chef and waiter training. A nutrition chef prepares food in large kitchens and institutions, and has knowledge of diet, nutrition, and health. They adapt meals according to various needs and follow public guidelines. Most of the apprenticeship period is spent in the production kitchen, with placements in departmental kitchens and canteens during certain periods.

Job Responsibilities

The nutrition chef works with the production of nutritious food, processing of raw materials, menu planning, meal preparation, special diets, and quantity, price, and nutritional calculations of recipes.

About the Apprenticeship at Ahus

  • You will be assigned a leader and a mentor.

  • Typically, the apprenticeship lasts for two years, which consists of one year of training and one year of value creation.

  • You will be paid during the apprenticeship; in the first half-year, you receive 30% of the base salary, then 40% in the second half-year, 50% in the third half-year, and 80% in the fourth half-year.
  • Upon completion of the apprenticeship, you will receive a vocational certificate as a nutrition chef, after passing the trade examination.

Further education colleges can contact the hospital with questions regarding shorter placement periods for Year 2 students.

We rely on recruiting engaged students for the apprenticeship positions at Ahus and therefore welcome Year 2 students to join us.

There may be limited places available, depending on how many supervisors have capacity, but please get in touch with us to see what is possible.

It is most relevant to accept Year 2 students in January or February.
