Finger injuries
Buddy wrapping and finger coupling using either tape, loops or a splint is done to help the injured finger stay in place. Keep it on for three weeks if you have not been given other instructions
Tape
- The tape should be kept dry and preferably not be replaced during the first week.
- In fractures, the tape should be replaced as infrequently as possible. Put a small compress between your fingers, then place the tape.
- Some will experience skin reactions from the glue on the tape like rashes and itching. If this is the case, change tape to a different type. Always use elastic tape, not athletic tape. You can buy elastic tape at the pharmacy.
- If your fingertips turn cold, white or numb, the tape is too tight and needs to be replaced.
Buddy finger loops
- Buddy finger loops are strapped around two fingers keeping the joints free so that you can bend and straighten the fingers. Keep the loops dry.
Finger splint and brace
- The splint and brace should be worn the way it was put on when you got it, fixed with elastic tape. The soft side should turn towards the skin. Keep the finger splint and tape dry.
- If your fingertips turn cold, white or numb, the tape is too tight and needs to be replaced.
Exercises
After treating the injury in the finger, it is important that you start doing finger exercises to regain strength, mobility and minimize pain and stiffness.
The swelling can last up to a year. It can also take a long time before the movement becomes normal, especially when bending the finger. This also applies to a common sprain.
- Stretch and bend the finger passively using your good hand and actively with the injured finger as soon as you are able to.
- Put the hand with the injured finger on a table with the palm facing down. Lift one finger at the time.
- Make a fist and stretch your fingers, possibly by squeezing a soft ball.
- Pick up small objects (coins, buttons etc.) with the injured finger and thumb.
Do these exercises several times a day, at least 10 repetitions each time.
