Fragmin injections
This information is for patients who have received treatment at the Orthopaedic Clinic at Ahus.
Blood clotting is a complication that can occur when wearing a cast, while waiting for surgery or after a chirurgical procedure.
To prevent blood clots you will self-administer Fragmin injections, once a day. Follow the doctor’s order. The injections are ready to use.
Where and how to administer the injections?
- Start by cleaning your hands.
- The syringe contains a small air bubble. Do not attempt to press the bubble out before injecting the medicament, it can lead to loss of medicament and as a consequence reduced dose.
- Choose an injection site on your tummy and pinch a fold of skin between thumb and index finger. See picure below. Remember to switch site of injection from day to day. Set the injection at approximately the same time every day.
- Insert the needle fully and firmly at 45-degree angle into the skin fold.
- Inject the dose slowly while still pinching the skin fold.
- Pull the needle slowly out.
- Do not rub the injection site. Some stinging is normal.
- Dispose the syringe in a closed container like a soda bottle, and tighten the cap. The container can be disposed as normal waste.
- Ask the pharmacy about disposal of unused medication.

Administer the injections in the subcutaneous fat on your tummy (area marked with green.
