Upper arm fractures

This information is for patients who have received treatment at the Orthopaedic Clinic at Ahus.

Most fractures of the topmost part of the upper arm (proximal humeral fractures) are treated conservatively without surgery.

The treatment consists of a short period of immobilization with the arm in a sling, followed by a longer period of exercise and rehabilitation. Start doing exercises already after one week. Take painkillers regularly throughout the first few days. It is recommended to sleep in a half sitting position in the beginning.

After a few days, some swelling and bruising around the elbow is common due to blood from the fracture area that gravitate. This will gradually disappear.

After 6 weeks, the fracture will typically be healed, and most patients can start using the arm for weight-bearing activity. Some patients require physical therapy.

Sling

This sling you are given has the following functions:

  • Pain relief by immobilizing the shoulder joint and upper arm, which in turn helps reduce pain and keep the fracture stable.
  • Fracture stability – prevent rotation and movement of the upper arm.

Treatment

  • For the first week, wear the sling night and day. Only remove when showering/taking a bath.
  • Move fingers and wrist. Squeeze a soft ball as exercise.
  • After about a week, you will also get an appointment for a check-up. The purpose of which is to make sure that your fracture is not displaced, and to help you get started with some exercises.

Restrictions for the following 6 weeks

  • Avoid lifting the arm above shoulder height.
  • Avoid rotating your arm outwards.
  • Avoid heavy lifting and strength exercises.
