Books and magazines

Search the library's catalogue Oria.no to see what is available in print or electronically, with links to electronic articles, journals, and books. Use BrowZine.com or the app to read e-journals on your personal computer or mobile device. With OpenAthens, you can access it from home.

Search in databases

You can now easily find, read, and follow your favourites among the library's many journal subscriptions via BrowZine, which is available on mobile, tablet, PC, and Mac. You can create shelves with your favourite journals and receive notifications when new issues are released (applicable to iOS and Android).

On Ahus PC: Go to www.browzine.com

  • Reading does not require a login, but you must have a personal account to create a journal shelf, save articles, and synchronise across multiple devices.

On personal PC/Mac and mobile/tablet, BrowZine must be combined with the login service OpenAthens for access to full text:

  1. Go to www.browzine.com or open the app (download the BrowZine app via Google Play / App Store)
  2. Select library: Akershus University Hospital
  3. The first time, you will be asked for your OpenAthens login information.
If you do not have access to OpenAthens, please contact biblioteket@ahus.no

How you search in the databases varies, but here are some general tips.
NB! The use of quotation marks (phrase search) and truncation is not recommended for subject searches in PubMed, as it disables automatic inclusion of MeSH subject headings.

Find specific articles/books

  • Searching for the article title in quotation marks (phrase search) usually yields few or just one result.
Example: "enhanced feeding and diminished postnatal growth failure in very-low-birth-weight infants"
  • Searching for a combination of title words and author names typically narrows the result list considerably.
    Example: enhanced feeding moltu blakstad

Search for exact phrases and terms (phrase search)

  • If you want two or more words to appear in a specific order, you must, in some databases (e.g. Oria), place quotation marks around the words.
    Example: "physical therapy"

Search for words with different endings (truncation)

  • Search for a word stem followed by * to retrieve results for all words that begin with what you have written.
Example: disorder* retrieves both disorder and disorders
Example: stabili* retrieves stabilise, stabiliser, stabilisation, stability, stabilize, stabilization, etc.

Combine search terms (AND, OR)

  • All search terms must occur – combine with AND. Example: resuscitat* AND infant*
  • At least one of the search terms must occur, e.g. when searching for synonyms, different spellings or languages, or when multiple options are of interest.
Example: ptsd OR "post-traumatic stress disorder" OR "posttraumatic stress disorder"

Proximity search (ADJ, NEAR)

  • In some databases, you can use ADJ (adjacent) or NEAR followed by a number to indicate that the words can occur within X words of each other.
Example Ovid databases: parent* ADJ5 addict*
    Example Cinahl: parent* N/5 addict*
    Example Cochrane: parent* NEAR/5 addict*
Example Web of Science: parent* NEAR/5 addict*

Search for multiple combinations simultaneously

  • Use parentheses to group search terms and search for many combinations at once.
Example: clubfoot and ("physical therap*" OR physiotherap* or exercis*)
Example: (drug* or substance* or opioid* or opiate* or sedative*) adj3 (abuse or addict* or misuse or dependen*)

Search for words with different spellings (wild cards)

Example of wild cards in Ovid databases:

  • Use ? to replace 1 or no characters. Example: colo?r retrieves both color and colour
  • Use # to replace 1 character. Example: wom#n retrieves both woman and women
