Research support and facilities

Ahus has several offerings and facilities for the hospital's researchers, including Campus Ahus (administrative support functions), EpiGen (research laboratory), and various research outpatient clinics. In addition, the research support department provides advice and guidance on several areas of responsibility, including biobanking, clinical studies, data protection, and finance.

Akershus University Hospital is responsible for ensuring that all research conducted by the organisation is planned, executed, and concluded in accordance with legal requirements and recognised principles of good scientific practice. Read more in the document below:

The project leader is responsible for ensuring that the project is approved in the department and in the division/clinic before commencement.

Research Responsible at Ahus:

Helge Røsjø, Director of Research and Innovation

In applications to the Regional Committees for Medical and Health Research Ethics (REK), it is the Director of Research and Innovation, Helge Røsjø, who should be listed as the responsible researcher. The following contact information should be provided when Ahus is the responsible research institution:

The User Council at Ahus offers an assessment with regard to:

  • How and in which parts of the project user involvement can be beneficial.
  • Any nomination of relevant user representatives with the necessary knowledge and experience.
  • Assessment of the eligibility of potential user participants.

In the establishment of new research projects, the project leader fills out a form (attached to this procedure) and sends it by email to ingrid.helene.halvorsen@ahus.no

User involvement should be in place as early as possible in the project process, and the User Council should be involved already in the initial phase of the project description.

Ahus has an agreement with services for sensitive data (TSD).

  • TSD provides researchers at UiO, the higher education sector, university hospitals, and other public research institutions with a research platform that meets the strict legal requirements for the processing and storage of sensitive research data.
  • TSD is developed and operated by USIT at UiO and is part of NorStore, the national infrastructure for the management and storage of scientific data.

What is TSD? (uio.no)

Ahus has entered into an agreement with UiO regarding the use of the "Digital Consent Solution".

Research projects at Ahus can now utilise UiO's digital consent solution.

The solution can be used to send out invitations to participate in research studies, and participants provide digital consent using an e-signature solution with two-factor authentication.

To gain access to the solution, the research project must have an active project area in the services for sensitive data (TSD). The consent itself is created in Nettskjema and is then linked to the respective project area in TSD, where the consent is stored.

The setup and use of the solution are administered and supported exclusively by UiO.

See more about the solution at uio.no

The Research Council and the European Commission have introduced requirements for Gender Equality Plans (GEP) at the organisational level for applicants and partners when contracts are drawn up. This requirement applies to calls for proposals with application deadlines from 2022 onwards. You can find more information and Ahus's long-term plan for diversity and equality on the page below.

The Department for Research Support in the Research and Innovation Division (FID) has established a routine for a “Response Team” where assistance can be obtained from a multidisciplinary group of research advisors.

The aim of this service is to further contribute to the efficiency and quality assurance of the formal and administrative processes prior to the commencement of new research projects and clinical studies.

We can assist and guide both before and after the allocation of research funding. We encourage you to contact us as early as possible in the process by sending a request with information about the study via email: kliniske.studier@ahus.no.

The Response Team will then arrange a joint meeting with relevant professionals who can provide advice and guidance to the project group in the following areas:

  • Research Administration
  • Medical Subject Library
  • Clinical Studies
  • Clinical Research Outpatient Clinic (Nordbyhagen, Gardermoen, Kongsvinger)
  • Biobank
  • Innovation
  • Pragmatic Studies
  • Data Protection and Research Law
  • Additional research guidance in monitoring, deviations, research ethics, and more.
Please specify in your inquiry which areas you require assistance and guidance in so that the Response Team can be assembled according to the needs of each project.

The research portal is available for researchers in Health South-East, and offers the following solutions: Microsoft Teams, Project Area, Research Workspace (a personal virtual workspace), Data Storage Area, Virtual Machines (for server capacity with backup), and File Transfer (a file moving tool).

For access to the homepage with extended information and to request access to the Research Portal:

Here are many good pieces of advice and useful tips on what is important to consider when undertaking a research project. The course portfolio is divided into various modules such as,

  • Research Law and Ethics
  • Research Administration
  • Clinical Studies
  • The Library
  • Biobank

The "Package Pathway for Research" courses are held twice a year. You can choose whether to participate in all or some of the course modules. You can attend in person or digitally, and it is arranged so that you can come and go between the courses.

The next course will be held as a full-day course on 18th October 2024. If you wish to register for one or more of the courses, please answer the questions and submit the registration form here: will be updated soon

Pragmatic studies share many common features with traditional randomised controlled trials, but differ by utilising resources that are already available within the healthcare system, thereby allowing for the inclusion of a large number of patients in a short period. They are also less costly than studies with traditional designs. Pragmatic studies are characterised by their aim to inform optimal clinical treatment, include patients from a typical clinical setting who are relevant to the clinical treatment, and utilise follow-up and data collection from established clinical registries with several meaningful endpoints.
